Fire engineering focuses on the application of scientific and engineering principles to protect people, property, and the environment from the harmful and destructive effects of fire and smoke.
Fire engineering is typically applied at the planning and design stages of a project but is rapidly being applied throughout the lifecycle of all buildings and infrastructure projects, including during construction phasing and in the occupation phase of a building.
The primary deliverable of the fire engineer is the fire strategy, it’s how fire engineers coordinate and develop an evidence base to demonstrate compliance to relevant regulations. However, the discipline of fire engineering is evolving to accommodate additional services and the needs of users across our built environment.
At Totus Digital we believe wholly in an end-to-end service, with the fire strategy being the primary deliverable that coordinates a compliance base for fire safety.
Are you preparing a planning application for your project? We’ll guide you through developing and presenting a Fire Statement to the local planning authority.
Are you assembling your design team for your project? We’ll work alongside you as your fire engineer to create your Design Fire Strategy (RIBA 2 - 4), ensuring that a credible evidence base compiled of CFD (and other suitable computational analysis) is developed for regulators, authorities, and end users.
Have you mobilised your construction team and started work on site? We’ll take the design fire strategy and develop a Construction Phase Fire Strategy to capture evidence of change control and mitigate construction phase fire risk through fire risk assessments, site inspections, and audits.
Is your existing building or asset occupied? Do you have a fire strategy from which you can accurately assess the fire risk? We’ll work with you to develop a fire strategy for your existing building, determining the original design basis and the provisions necessary to ensure the ongoing safe operation of your building.
A higher-risk building is over 18m high or has seven or more stories.
As of April 2024, if your project includes buildings in this height category, you must notify the Building Safety Regulator, who will act as the statutory consultee at planning and the building control body during design and construction. Your project will be subject to four gateways: planning, design, construction, and operation.
